Amanda M. Hauth remembers when golf for her was making sand angels in the bunkers, while now it is celebrating the rare hole-in-one and anchoring her high school team.
In the Windsor High School senior’s future, golf may lead to a college scholarship and, just maybe, playing golf professionally.
“I want to see where college takes me. I plan on doing really good in college, but if that is an option, I would take it,” Hauth said.
Hauth has been a member of AVID, a college-preparatory program, since the eighth grade. Her favorite subjects are in her business core area and include math and psychology.
“I want to go to college, and I want to major in psychology and criminology and minor in business,” Hauth said.
It could lead, she said, to a job as a forensic psychologist.
“My mom has a background in psychology and criminology, and it fascinates me,” Hauth said.
She has been offered a scholarship to play golf at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Golf is a big part of her life and has been since she started going to the course with her father, who is an avid golfer.
“I have grown up around it,” Hauth said. “When I was young I would do sand angels in the bunkers and occasionally hit some shots. I played it since I was 6 or 7, around it and taking lessons, and in eighth grade I said I could do something with it, I have a natural swing.”
Hauth has played on the Windsor High varsity golf team since she was a freshman and remembers she shot a 116 in her first tournament and an 81 in her latest tournament.
“I love how it is competitive. With my Dad and I, we are competitive,” she said. “In golf, you worry about yourself and your team. I like how it is individual, but it is also team effort to win.”
She was the most valuable player on her team in her sophomore and junior years and this year won the individual Sonoma County League title.
This past summer, she attended a Nike-sponsored golf camp for juniors at Pebble Beach, where she had a hole-in-one on Friday the 13th at the Peter Hay Golf Course.
She also played tournaments this past summer with the Junior Golf Association for Northern California, which she said was valuable because of the high caliber of players she competed against.
Hauth also said golf gives her something to focus on and is a good way to relieve stress.
She also has been a Girl Scout since she was in the first grade and is now a Scout leader.
Her father has the Hauth’s Family Taekwondo in Windsor, but she said she has not studied martial arts since she was younger.
“I do know the things to keep me safe,” she said. “My parents taught me to watch my surroundings, that everybody could be a bad person.”
