With spring sports on the way, many may have started to forget all about the winter sports. However, this past basketball season, of both the women’s and men’s teams, deserves some discussion.

Let’s look at the women’s basketball team first. The Lady Panther basketball team had one of the more interesting seasons we have witnessed in a long time.

For starters, the girls lost three starting seniors, and they had the challenge of defending their NBL League and Playoff Championship. Their preseason schedule was one of the hardest, if not the most difficult of anyone in the NBL.

With that the ladies struggled early on against some of the top teams in Northern California. However, from the first game of league the ladies were back to their championship winning ways. They finished league with an amazing 12-2 record, winning eight out of their last nine.

However, disaster struck on senior night against the dreaded Montgomery Vikings. The Lady Panthers lost one of the most prominent players in the NBL, Hannah Sourek, to a broken tailbone. With that, the Ladies lost a girl with great experience and guts, a girl who averaged 12.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

The Ladies ended up with a 2 seed in the NBL Playoffs. Unfortunately, without Hannah they could not keep up with a relentless Montgomery Vikings team in the NBL Semi-Finals. The Ladies, however, still have an NCS Playoff Game. Overall, it was another great season for the Lady Panthers.

The Men’s Basketball team this year gave us a sign for great things to come. The boys finished seventh in league and posted a 3-11 record for the season. Some fans might think that we looked terrible and lost almost every game. However, there were many upsides to their season. First off, it was the first time since the 05-06 season that we won 7 games, and the first time since 07-08 season that we posted three league wins.

The Men’s Basketball team will unfortunately be losing seniors Stefan Voge, Jakari Keita, Marc Hammond, Derek La Mar, and Nolan Chavez. However, the Panthers JV team had a fantastic season with many rising stars for upcoming years. The Men’s Basketball team is on its way up with Coach John R. McGill III leading the way.
